What you will be able to do

  • Explain the four levels of healthcare interoperability and where each standard fits.
  • Read and triage an HL7 v2 message and describe the role of the interface engine.
  • Navigate FHIR resources, the REST API, US Core profiles, and SMART on FHIR app launch.
  • Choose the right terminology (LOINC, SNOMED CT, RxNorm, ICD-10) and explain value sets and mapping.
  • Describe how organizations exchange data through Direct, HIEs, and TEFCA, and the consent and HIPAA rules that apply.
  • Specify, map, and test an interface with synthetic data and keep it healthy in production.

What is inside

6 modules, 12 lessons. Each module ends in a graded quiz.

  1. 01

Health Data and the Interoperability Problem

A tour of where health data is created and stored, why it so often ends up trapped in silos, and why letting it flow between systems is genuinely hard. The module then maps the families of open standards that solve each part of the problem and shows where the interoperability analyst fits in.

  2. 02

    HL7 v2 Messaging

HL7 v2.x remains the workhorse of clinical data exchange, carrying admissions, orders, results, and billing events between systems every second of the day. This module breaks down the structure of a v2 message and then follows that message across the wire through an interface engine, so an analyst can read it, route it, and triage it when it fails.

  3. 03

    FHIR: Resources and APIs

An intermediate look at how the HL7 FHIR standard models clinical data as modular resources and exposes it through a RESTful API. You will learn the core resources and references, Bundles, profiles like US Core, and the REST interactions, search, SMART on FHIR authorization, and Bulk Data export that power modern healthcare apps.

  4. 04

    Terminologies and Semantic Interoperability

Healthcare data only becomes useful when a lab result, a diagnosis, or a medication means the same thing to the receiving system as it did to the sender. This module surveys the major clinical code systems and explains why sharing meaning, not just format, is the hardest and most valuable level of interoperability.

  5. 05

    Exchange Networks, Consent and Privacy

This module explains how US healthcare organizations move patient data between systems through push, query, and patient-mediated exchange, and how the law, consent models, and privacy obligations shape what an interface is allowed to send. You will learn the roles of Direct messaging, HIEs, record locator services, TEFCA, and FHIR-based patient-access APIs.

Interoperability in Practice: Integration, Quality and Testing

A hands-on look at how healthcare interfaces move from a written specification to a tested, production interface, and how analysts keep those interfaces healthy through monitoring, error handling, data-quality checks, and disciplined change management. Vendor-neutral throughout, using a generic EHR and integration engine.
